About Us
The presence of Islam in Edinburgh dates back to the mid-20th century, as Muslim families from across the world — including South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey — made Scotland their home. Over the decades, the Muslim population in Edinburgh and East Lothian has grown steadily, enriching the cultural and spiritual fabric of the region.
In response to this growth, Portobello Islamic Educational Centre was officially established in the year 2000, offering a dedicated space for Salah (prayer), Islamic learning, youth support, and community services.
As a diverse and dynamic institution, we embrace the evolving needs of our community and remain committed to shaping a future built on mutual respect and shared progress. Our objectives reflect this vision:

Education & Faith Development
We are dedicated to nurturing Islamic knowledge for all ages, offering classes, study circles, and mentorship that strengthen faith, identity, and connection to the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Community & Unity
Our mosque strives to bring together individuals and families from Edinburgh and East Lothian, building strong bonds, mutual support, and a sense of belonging for all who walk through our doors.

A Welcoming Space for All
We provide a warm, inclusive environment for reverts, newcomers to Islam, and long-standing community members alike, a place to learn, grow, and find comfort and companionship.

Service, Support & Outreach
Rooted in compassion, we engage with the wider community through interfaith work, charitable initiatives, and partnerships with local organisations, serving our neighbours with kindness and openness.
