About Us

The presence of Islam in Edinburgh dates back to the mid-20th century, as Muslim families from across the world — including South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey — made Scotland their home. Over the decades, the Muslim population in Edinburgh and East Lothian has grown steadily, enriching the cultural and spiritual fabric of the region.

In response to this growth, Portobello Islamic Educational Centre was officially established in the year 2000, offering a dedicated space for Salah (prayer), Islamic learning, youth support, and community services.

As a diverse and dynamic institution, we embrace the evolving needs of our community and remain committed to shaping a future built on mutual respect and shared progress. Our objectives reflect this vision:

Outreach & Education

We actively engage with the wider community to dispel misconceptions about Islam, promote dialogue, and encourage understanding through educational initiatives and interfaith collaborations.

Community Building

We strive to strengthen relationships among all who call Edinburgh and Scotland their home, fostering an environment of mutual support and belonging.

A Safe & Inclusive Space

Our centre is a welcoming environment for all, providing opportunities to learn, grow, and engage in a wide range of beneficial activities.

Social Support & Charity

We are dedicated to serving those in need by working closely with local organisations, food banks, and charities to provide essential support and assistance to vulnerable members of our society.
